How to Tie a Cowboy Halter

Cowboy, or rope, halters are commonly used for training horses. Many trainers feel they can communicate better with the horse they are working with using a cowboy halter made of rope instead of leather. A cowboy halter, made of a durable rope, can be tied and customized to fit each horse. If the halter does not fit snugly enough, it can simply be adjusted and retied.

Instructions

    • 1

Slip the cowboy halter over the horse's nose.

    • 2

Bring the sides of the cowboy halter up each side of the horse's head and pull the longer side over the top of the head, behind the ears.

    • 3

Pass the end of the rope from the longer side through the rope eye and loop it over the top of the right side of the eye. Wrap it around and bring it over the left side of the eye. Pass it under the doubled rope and over the loop eye.

    • 4

Adjust the nose band to relieve pressure on the fiador knot if it fits too snugly. Grasp each side of the knot and push the knot together to loosen it.
