How to Fit Shoes for a Western Saddle

Whether you plan to enter your horse in western competitions or just hit the trails around the barn, proper headgear and footgear are required. You need a sturdy riding helmet to protect your head and a good pair of boots to protect your feet and keep you safe in the saddle. Everyday shoes and sneakers are not suitable western riding apparel. If you plan to ride in a western saddle you need a quality pair of western boots.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the heel on the western boot you are considering. The heel should be between 1 and 2 1/2 inches high. A smaller heel could allow your foot to slip through the stirrup and become caught. A larger heel makes it difficult to maintain the proper balance in the saddle.

    • 2

Feel the bottom of the boot. The sole of the boot should be smooth, not textured. A textured tread could cause your foot to get stuck in the stirrup.

    • 3

Put the boots on and make sure they are the right size. You should use your usual shoe size when shopping for boots to wear with your western saddle.

    • 4

Mount your horse and sit in the saddle. Do not ask the horse to move. Just sit still and position yourself in the saddle. Have a handler hold the the horse if it will not remain still.

Place your feet in the stirrups. The ball of your foot should be in the stirrup, with your toes pointing up and your heels pointing down as much as possible. Work on maintaining that position as you ride the horse.
