Performance Boots
-
Tendon boots are often used in high-performance horses. As the name suggests, they are primarily designed to protect and support the tendons in the front legs and feature a thick back that absorbs any shock to the back of the leg. Usually these boots are open in the front and they are favored by jumpers. Brushing boots, or splint boots, also protect the leg from shocks and impact. Unlike tendon boots, brushing boots have a pad that lies against the inside of the leg. The boot sits under the knee and runs down to the ankle. Another boot used in performance horses is called the sports medicine boot. It is a soft boot that fully encases the leg from below the knee to all the way around the ankle. It has stretch and give and moves with the leg while offering protection and support. These boots are often worn by barrel racers.
Light Work Boots
-
Over reach boots are commonly used in riding horses. Often, horses' back legs will reach too far forward and the toe of the rear hoof will kick the back of the front hoof. Over reach boots fit around the ankle and extend downward to cover and protect the tender heel and coronet area on the back of the front foot. Knee boots are sometimes used in lighter work, especially when schooling horses over jumps. As the name implies, the boots protect the kneecap of the horse. Ankles can also be protected by skid boots.
Wraps
-
Some riders prefer to use wraps, also called bandages or polo wraps, when exercising horses. These can be made from a variety of soft materials, like fleece, and some feature elasticity. Wraps provide both protection and extra support, but must be put on by an experienced and knowledgeable person. Wrapping the legs too tight can cause injury and restrict movement, while wraps that are too loose prevent a safety hazard for both horse and rider.
Boots for Traveling
-
Protective boots are also made specifically for traveling horses. Travel boots, or shipping boots, are large, soft shaped boots that protect the entire leg and are used when transporting horses. They have a lot of padding and should be breathable. There are some knee boots and fetlock boots that are specifically designed for use while traveling.
