How to Connect a Billet to a Cinch

A comfortable saddle is an essential piece of equipment for any equine enthusiast. The saddle holds the rider in place, reducing the chances of a dangerous fall while the horse is in motion. The saddle rests on the horse's back and is held in place by a cinch strap that runs under the horse's chest. A set of billets attach to the cinch on the right side of the saddle and must be properly buckled to prevent an accident.

Instructions

    • 1

Catch the horse, halter it and secure the animal to a hitching post. Tying the horse securely eliminates the possibility of wandering while you connect the billets. If the horse is impatient and paws or fidgets while you work, place a few handfuls of sweet feed in a pan and let the horse nibble.

    • 2

Brush the horse down, concentrating on the area between the withers and the flank. Use a stiff brush or curry comb to remove heavy dirt, and follow up with a soft finishing brush.

    • 3

Set the saddle pad squarely on the horse's back, with the front of the pad just behind the withers. Lay the saddle on top of the pad, crossing the stirrups over the seat to keep them out of the way while you rig up the saddle.

Stand on the horse's right side and hold the cinch in one hand. Feed the billet strap through the D-ring on the cinch, passing the buckle through the lowest hole on the billet. Pull down firmly on the cinch to secure the buckle and tighten up the strap. Leave the cinch dangling down toward the ground.

Walk around to the horse's left side and gently reach under the chest to grasp the cinch. Pull the cinch up against the chest just behind the front legs and thread the latigo down through the remaining D-ring on the cinch. Pass the end of the latigo down through the ring on the saddle once more to form a complete loop, and pull up firmly to tighten the cinch and hold the saddle securely in place.
