How to Reseal a Skylight in a Horse Trailer

Skylights are an inexpensive way to bring natural light into any area, including the inside of horse trailer. They can over time develop a leak that if not fixed when first noticed can lead to further complications down the road. When water enters through a crack, it can get between the inner and outer walls of the trailer and can cause mold and mildew. When repairing skylight from the outside, do not stand or apply any weight to the glass, as this may cause further damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the interior and exterior of the horse trailer and see if you can identify where the water may be entering from. If now drips are visible, look for discoloration that can indicate the entry point.

    • 2

Remove existing caulking using a putty knife to scrap away the sealant between the skylight and the trailer structure. Clean the area using a cloth that is moistened with paint thinner. Once the area has been cleaned and any residue from the caulking has been removed, wipe the area down with a cloth using soap and water. Repeat this process inside the horse trailer as well.

Place a tube of silicone into a caulking gun. Use a pair of scissors to cut off the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle. Apply a bead of silicone around entire area of the skylight, ensuring the entire area is sealed; there will be a lip between the trailer and the skylight where the flashing or lip from the skylight goes under the outer wall of the trailer. This is the most likely place that a leak may have developed, and extra care should be exercised to ensure that it is well-sealed.

Repeat this same process inside the trailer to make sure it is fully sealed.
