How to Use a Stud Chain on a Horse

The term stud chain is a bit misleading. A stud chain can be used on any horse to give the handler additional control. Adding a stud chain to the halter can be very effective, especially if you are working with a spirited horse, or any horse that tends to get pushy when being led. A stud chain is not a replacement for proper training, but it can provide that extra level of control and allow the handler to more effectively train the horse how to lead.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the halter on the horse and make sure it is properly fitted. The halter should not pinch the horse or feel too tight, but it should not hang too loosely either.

    • 2

Stand on the left side of the horse. Grasp the chain and pull it over the horse's nose.

    • 3

Pass the end of the chain through the ring on the right side of the halter. Pass the chain under the horse's jaw and attach the snap to the O-ring on the left side of the halter.

    • 4

Loosen the stud chain so that it is not touching the horse. Walk the horse as you normally would. Pop the stud chain quickly if the horse begins to charge ahead or try to pull away. The action of the stud chain is similar to that of a choke collar on a dog.
