How to Measure a Tree Passier

A saddle tree is one of the fundamental parts of a riding saddle. Its purpose is to distribute the weight of the rider over the back of the horse. Saddle trees come in various shapes and sizes depending on the type of riding engaged in. Passier is a European saddle maker that produces customized saddles, including the tree, to fit any horse.

  • Flexible piece of baling wire -- 1/10 inch in diameter and 20 inches long

      Download a fitting template from the Passier website.

      Take the crosswise measurement on the horse's back. Start 2 to 3 inches from behind the horse's scapula. After the measurement, place the wire on the template and trace the length. Take the next two measurements 6 inches from the first, then the second. Trace these measurements on the template as you did the first.

      Take the length measurement by placing the wire along the points where the cross measurements were taken. Trace this length on the template.

      Send the the template along with photos of your horse to the Passier saddle maker, who will custom-build the saddle tree.
