How to Replace a Slotted Concho

Bling may be the rage on Rodeo Drive but it has also found its way into the rodeo arena. Riders are using fancy silver conchos, sometimes adorned with rhinestones and crystals, to bling up their saddles and other leather gear. Changing out conchos for a new look is a moderately simple matter, even for slotted conchos. As the name suggests, slotted conchos have two openings or slots. They are most often used as washers for saddle strings, thin strips of leather used to tie gear onto a saddle.

Instructions

    • 1

Use an awl, screwdriver or needle nose pliers to untie the strings. Strings are tied with a slit braid method, where each string is fed through a slit on the other string; carefully pull the strings apart.

    • 2

Slide the old concho off the strings and replace with the new concho. Be sure it fits snugly against the saddle or other piece if not working on a saddle. Smooth out the strings and ensure that they are of the same length.

    • 3

Pull the bottom string through the slit on the top string and pull tight.

    • 4

Pull the new bottom string through the new top string and again pull tight. Adjust the strings until they lay smoothly.
