How to Attach Split Reins

Split reins consist of two separate strips, each attached to one side of the bit. Split reins are attached to the bridle's bit using slobber straps. Slobber straps are thick straps of leather with two holes in either end. The slobber straps keep the ends of the reins away from the horse's mouth to protect them from the horse's saliva or water when the animal drinks. Slobber straps also add a bit of weight on either end of the bit to give the rider more control.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a horse bridle with a bit on a work surface. Thread one slobber strap through each ring on either side of the bit. Fold the slobber straps in half and match up their ends.

    • 2

Stick the end of a split rein that is to be attached to the bit between the two folded layers of one slobber strap. Line up the holes in the strap with the holes in the end of the rein. Repeat this step on the opposite side with the second split rein.

    • 3

Thread one end of a thin leather lace through one hole in the slobber strap. Push it through the hole in the rein and out the hole in the other side of the strap. Thread the same end back through the second hole in the backside of the strap, through the rein and out the front side. Tie the two ends of the laces together tightly in a knot to secure. Repeat this process on the opposite side with a second leather lace.

    • 4

Pull on each rein with one hand while holding on the bit in the other hand to ensure that the rein is securely attached. Untie the knot in the leather lace and retie to tighten if the reins seem loose in the slobber straps.
