How to Tie the Gullet Knot

A series of knots connects the straps in a horse's halter. One of these knots is called a gullet knot. Gullet knots are positioned on both sides of a halter, just behind the horse's jaw. The knot that is commonly used for the gullet knot is also called a double overhand knot.

Instructions

Grasp the rope with both hands. Place your left hand about 8 inches from one end of the rope, which is termed the "short" end. Place your right hand approximately 7 inches to the right of your left hand.

    • 2

Move your left hand toward your right and then slightly downward, so the left portion of the rope section folds over the right to make an overhand loop.

    • 3

Direct the short end of the rope behind the overhand loop, and then through the loop. Direct the short end back toward the left. This marks the completion of the first overhand loop.

    • 4

Thread 10 inches of the second rope through the first overhand loop. Point the end of the rope away from you as you direct it through the loop. This end of the rope will be referred to as the long end of the second rope.

    • 5

Bring the long end of the second rope underneath the first overhand loop and back up toward your body.

    • 6

Wrap the long end of the second rope over itself, and then under itself (a little to the left of the first overhand loop). Direct this end of the rope back through the first overhand loop, moving from left to right. This forms the second overhand loop.

    • 7

Pull the ends of the ropes to tighten the double overhand loops. Adjust the loops to the right or left, if necessary, until the crossed areas of both loops are aligned.
