How to Replace Leg Straps on Blankets

Horse blankets take a significant amount of abuse during the winter months, especially if you live in a cold climate and your horses have to wear the blankets both inside their stalls and during turnout. The leg straps on blankets tend to be one of the first components to wear out due to the constant movement of the horse's legs. Fortunately, you can order replacement leg straps for your blanket and extend its useful lifespan by replacing the leg straps as needed.

Order replacement leg straps for your blanket. In most cases you can order new leg straps directly from the manufacturer of your blanket or you can make do by ordering universal leg straps from a tack store.

Remove old leg straps from the blanket. If they are sewn on, use a stitch remover to release then from the blanket. If they are the type that simply snaps into place using D rings, you can simply unsnap and discard them. Launder the blanket so that the fabric is clean when you attach the new leg straps. You can hand-wash the blanket with laundry soap in your bathtub or put it in an industrial-size washer at your local laundromat.

Attach new leg straps to the blanket. If the leg straps are the snap on type, you can just snap the new straps onto the existing D rings. If the leg straps have to be sewn on, you can sew them to the blanket yourself, use a blanket adhesive to glue the leg straps into place or you can take the blanket to a professional tailor and have the straps stitched on professionally. The replacement leg straps you purchase will have specific instructions for attaching them to the blanket included in the packaging.
