How to Darken Reins

Over the course of time, the reins on your favorite bridle may stretch out or break, requiring you to replace the reins with a new set. Leather changes color as it ages and undergoes repeated cleanings; this color change means that there is a good chance that a brand new set of reins will be a different color than the bridle you ordered them for, even if you ordered the same color from the original manufacturer. If that's a concern to you, you can darken your new reins so they better match your existing tack.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a small amount of neatsfoot oil onto your rag or sponge. Neatsfoot oil will darken your leather reins, and it works to clean and condition the reins.

    • 2

Use the rag or sponge to rub neatsfoot oil into your reins. Make sure to get all the small spaces in between buckles and braiding. Apply the oil as evenly as possible.

    • 3

Use a clean rag or sponge to wipe away excess neatsfoot oil. Allow the reins to dry for several hours. If the color is not dark enough after several hours, repeat the process until you are satisfied with the color of the reins.
