How to Measure Horse Fly Sheets

The wet days of spring and the hot days of summer are perfect for breeding the flying, biting pests that can irritate your horse's delicate skin. One of the best ways to protect your horse is to cover him with a fly sheet. The breathable lightweight material provides protection from both insects and sunburn without using chemicals. But the fly sheet must fit properly to achieve optimum coverage and protection. Different brands use a variety of sizes, but all are based on the actual size of the horse. Once you know this, measuring a fly sheet is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the fly sheet in half along the dorsal line. Lay the sheet out on a large flat surface with the head opening facing one way and the hind opening facing the other.

    • 2

Place the end of the tape measure at the front center of the sheet. If the sheet has chest fasteners, this will be at the end of the material near the buckle. If the sheet is designed with a closed front, this will be the center of the front vertical chest seam.

    • 3

Measure in a straight line from the front center seam to the back opening along the middle of the sheet. If the sheet includes a separate tail covering, do not include it in the measurement. Write down the measurement in inches.
