How to Measure a Western Child's Saddle

Horseback riding can be a very rewarding hobby for both children and adults, but riders need to always put safety first. Part of riding safely is making sure that all of your tack, including your saddle, is properly fitted and in good condition. Proper saddle fit is even more critical for children, since they may not have developed the balance and skills they need to keep them safe. Choosing an appropriately sized saddle for your child, and measuring it properly, is the best way to ensure safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a basic saddle fitting guide to determine what size saddle seat your child may need (see Resources). Keep in mind, however, that this is only a guide and every child will have a different body shape and size. The key is to choose a saddle that feels secure without feeling cramped.

    • 2

Place the saddle on a sturdy stand. It is easier to get an accurate measurement if the saddle is sitting on a stable surface.

    • 3

Take the measuring tape and place it directly behind the saddle horn. Use a soft measuring tape like the kind tailors use.

    • 4

Extend the measuring tape to the back of the saddle seat. Note the reading on the tape--this is the size of the saddle seat.
