How Do I Measure my Saddle Size?

No matter what type of horse you own or what style of riding you prefer, it is important that the tack you choose fits both your horse and your body. Choosing a saddle that is too large will reduce the security of your seat, while a saddle that is too small quickly will become uncomfortable. That is why it is so important to measure your saddle carefully.

Instructions

  1. Measuring Your Saddle Seat

    • 1

Place your saddle on a sturdy saddle stand. It is important to have the saddle on a sturdy surface for an accurate measurement.

    • 2

Take your tape measure and place it behind the saddle horn on a Western saddle. For an English saddle place the measuring tape on the round button on the front of the saddle.

    • 3

Extend the tape measure to the back of the saddle seat and read the tape measure. This is the seat size for your saddle.

Finding the Right Size Saddle for You

    • 4

Visit your local tack shop or saddlery and sit in several of the saddles. Sit in the saddle as if you were riding, placing your legs in the correct position.

    • 5

Note how the saddle fits your body. The saddle seat should feel secure and hold you firmly in place without feeling cramped.

    • 6

Measure the saddle seat size on the saddle that fits your body best. You also can look at the tag on the saddle---the seat size should be prominently displayed there.
