Instructions on How to Make a Wooden Saddle Stand

With all of the money spent on saddles, you should have a place to store them while you are not using them. Saddle stands help keep your equipment in proper working order, while giving you a place to show the saddle off. In order to support the saddle to keep its shape, you should use a saddle stand. You can easily create a saddle stand from scrap wood. These stands can be as easy as a sawhorse with a wide top, or more complex.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a C-clamp to fasten the two 1-by-12-inch boards together. Mark the center point of the boards on the 12-inch length. Measure out from that point 2 ¾ inches on both sides and mark those points.

    • 2

Measure 8 inches from the marked ends, down the long side of the board. Make a mark with the pencil at this point. Repeat to make a mark on the other long side of the board.

    • 3

Use a ruler to draw a line from the mark at 8 inches to the mark on the same side of the center point. Repeat on the other side. Cut the 1-by-12-inch boards along the lines. Set these aside for a moment. These boards will be the sides of the saddle stand.

    • 4

Drill two holes in six 1-by-6-inch boards. Use a 7/64-inch drill bit to drill holes to attach the sides. Drill through the flat side ¼ inch in from the short side of the board and about 1 inch from each long edge.

    • 5

Lay out the side piece with the diagonal cuts and line one 1-by-6-inch board flush with the uncut end. Use the drill and screws to attach the pieces together. Attach the second 1-by-12-inch board the same way. This will give your stand a bottom.

    • 6

Stand your piece upright and attach another pre-drilled 1-by-6 flush where the 8-inch mark was on each side of the stand. Line up the next 1-by-6-inch piece level with the last and flush with the end pieces. Attach with screws. Repeat on the other side.

    • 7

Lay the last 1-by-6-inch board on the top of the stand flush with the 1-by-12-inch boards and attach with screws. Sand the structure down and apply paint, stain or lacquer.
