How to Care for an English Saddle

Whether the English saddle you own cost $100 or several thousand dollars, it is important to care for your tack properly. A saddle that is well taken care of can last for years or even decades, while a poorly cared for saddle will begin to break down in just a short time. There are a number of leather care items no saddle owner should be without, and using those items on a regular basis is the best way to keep your saddle looking like new.

Instructions

Place your saddle on a saddle stand or other sturdy surface. Make sure the saddle is sitting level.

    • 2

Dip a soft cloth in a little bit of water and then in the can of saddle soap. Work up a good lather and start to go over the entire surface of the saddle. Pay particular attention to parts of the saddle that appear to be dirty or muddy.

    • 3

Use the cloth to massage the saddle soap into the surface of the saddle. Allow the saddle soap to soak into the leather for at least 10 to 15 minutes, then wipe away the excess with a clean, dry cloth.

If you have a dark-colored saddle, apply mink oil. Do not use mink oil on a light-colored saddle, since it can permanently darken the leather. The mink oil will help to soften the leather, and it will also provide protection from water. To appply the mink oil, dampen a clean cloth and dip it in the can of mink oil. Massage the mink oil into the leather, allow it to soak in for 10 to 15 minutes, then wipe away the excess with a soft cloth.

Turn the saddle over carefully and examine the underside. Apply saddle soap to any areas where you see sweat stains or dirt. Examine the underside of the saddle for any rips or tears, too. If any are noted, take your saddle to a repair shop and have them fixed before using the saddle again.
