How to Attach a D Ring Bit to the Reins

The D-ring snaffle is one of the most popular, and one of the most versatile, bits in the equine world. This widely used bit can be used for everything from breaking young horses to competing on older and more experienced ones. But in order for any bit, including the D-ring snaffle, to work properly, it must be attached to the bridle the right way. Placing the bridle and the reins in the wrong position can have a serious impact on the comfort, and the safety, of both horse and rider.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bridle on your horse if he is available; otherwise, hang the bridle from a bridle rack or hook. Bring out your reins and locate the small curved hook at each end.

    • 2

Pull up on the end of each rein until the leather disengages from the curved hook. Pull the end of the rein free of the flap that holds it in place.

    • 3

Place the end of the rein around the D-ring snaffle and loop it through the holder. Pull the leather until the small slit in the end of the rein is positioned over the curved metal hook.

    • 4

Push the rein down onto the curved metal hook, then pull back to lock it in place. Place the end of the rein through the small leather flap to hold it in place. Use the same steps to attach the other end of the reins to the other side of the D-ring snaffle.
