Things You'll Need
- Rope halter
Instructions
Place the halter on your horse and make note of where the misfits are occurring. The nose band should not be too low on the nose, nor too high. Ideally, it should rest just above the sensitive skin of the nostrils. The neck piece should not be so loose that the horse can pull the halter over its ears, nor should it be so tight that you cannot comfortably put two fingers under it.
Adjust the rope halter to fit properly. If the nose band is too low or too high, the side knots of the rope halter will have to be loosened or tightened accordingly. Work the knots loose but only adjust the rope by one inch at a time, and only work one knot at a time, otherwise you can get confused and cause the entire halter to become loose.
Tie the halter properly so that the neck piece fits correctly. This may seem simple, but it is important to do right. Bring the end of the rope through the loop on the cheekpiece, then loop it under itself and back through the loop you just created, tightening it as you go. You can adjust this to be looser or tighter, as needed,
Press the knots together to loosen them. Especially when working with a fiador knot in a rope halter, the key to loosening the knot is to press the knot together, then work the ropes loose.
Try the halter on as you go. As you adjust the halter, be sure it fits by placing it on your horse's head and noting the placement with each adjustment. Trying to rearrange the knots without verifying fit will only cause you to have to redo the entire thing.
