How to Replace Worn Stirrup Tread Leathers

No matter what type of horse you ride, stirrups play an important role in your riding safety. Stirrups that are worn or damaged can put you at risk, so it is important to check the condition of your saddle each and every time you ride. Instructions

    • 1

Place your saddle on a sturdy saddle rack or saddle stand. This will make it much easier to work with your saddle.

    • 2

Pull up the flap on your saddle and pull the end of the stirrup leather down. Examine the condition of the stirrup leather carefully, looking for any worn areas or tears. If the stirrup leathers appear to be worn they will need to be replaced.

    • 3

Unhook the stirrup leather and pull it free of the saddle. Pull the stirrup leather out of the hole in the top of the stirrup and sit the stirrup aside. Pull the new stirrup leather through the hole in the stirrup and connect the stirrup leather to your saddle.

    • 4

Adjust the length of the stirrup leather by pulling the stirrup toward your armpit. The stirrup leather should reach your armpit when it is properly positioned. Make sure the stirrups are the same length on both sides of the saddle.

    • 5

Remove the leather tread on the bottom of each stirrup by pushing up from the bottom of the stirrup. Purchase a new tread from your tack shop or saddlery, then push that tread through the top of the stirrup. Make sure that the stirrup tread locks into place.
