How to Measure Hoof Boots

If you have a horse with hoof problems such as abscesses or tender feet or are a trail rider and worried about a lost shoe on a long ride, you may want to invest in hoof boots. There are many brands available--your farrier or veterinarian may be able to recommend one--but most hoof boots are measured in a similar way. There are some fitting concerns individual to brands, however, that you may need to be aware of before purchasing.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up, or have your helper pick up, one of your horse's hooves. If you are worried about your horse spooking at the sound of the tape measure, you may want a helper to assist you. Introduce your horse to the sound of the tape measure before you and your helper start handling the tape measure.

    • 2

Measure the length of your horse's hoof by placing the tape measure across the middle of the front of the hoof (the toe) and stretch it straight back to the middle of the back of the hoof (called the buttress).

    • 3

Find the widest part of the bottom of your horse's hoof and measure at this point.

    • 4

Measure the other hoof, whether the other front hoof or the other back hoof, to find out which hoof is bigger and go with the bigger size, since hoof boots tend to be sold in pairs. Measure the other two hooves if you want hoof boots to go on each foot.

    • 5

Find the closest corresponding size in the brand of hoof boot you are interested in. Always go one size bigger rather than smaller; otherwise, you might have difficulty with putting the boots on.
