How to Measure Stirrup Leathers

Your safety when mounted depends on the quality of your equipment -- and on how well it fits your body. Instructions

    • 1

Place the saddle on a sturdy saddle stand or saddle rack. It is important that the saddle be on a sturdy surface to get an accurate measurement.

    • 2

Stand next to the saddle and carefully lift the flap that covers the stirrup leathers. Be careful when lifting the flap not to bend the leather more than necessary. Bending the leather repeatedly could cause the leather to crack.

    • 3

Take the end of your tape measure and place it up against the top of the flap that covers the stirrup leather. Pull the tape measure down until it is just above the point where the stirrup leather connects to the stirrup iron. This is the length of your stirrup leather.

    • 4

Test the stirrup leather to make sure it is the appropriate length for safe riding. Place your hand against the top of the flap and pull the stirrup leather toward you. When the stirrup leather is adjusted properly, the tip of the leather should reach your armpit.
