Things You'll Need
- Halter and lead
Instructions
Catch your horse, using the halter and lead. Slide the halter on over the animal's nose, buckling the crown piece behind the ears. Clip the lead rope onto the ring under your horse's chin and lead the animal to your grooming area.
Tie your horse securely to the grooming post. Use a quick-release knot in case the animal becomes frightened and pulls back. Groom the horse.
Set the bareback pad gently on your horse's back, directly behind the withers. The pad is designed to provide you and your horse with a more comfortable ride, and centering it on the animal's back mimics the most natural position of the rider. If your horse has extremely tall or pronounced withers, you can slide the bareback pad back a little to prevent discomfort.
Place the cinch strap down under your horse's chest and pull it tightly around to the other side, buckling it securely to prevent the bareback pad from slipping. Tighten the pad slowly to prevent your horse from becoming nervous. Your horse will naturally suck in air as you tighten the cinch, so walk the animal a little and tighten the bareback pad again before mounting.
