How to Attach Stirrups to a Saddle

The stirrups are an integral part of any saddle, and if a stirrup is damaged, it is important to replace it before using the saddle again. Replacing the stirrups on an English saddle is not as difficult as you may think. In most cases, you will be able to finish the job in a matter of minutes.

      Place the saddle on a sturdy saddle rack. Pull the stirrups down to the end of the stirrup leathers.

      Lift up the flap above the stirrup leather and look for the bar where the stirrup leather is attached. Locate the end of the stirrup leather and pull it down until it is past the flap. Count the number of holes from the end of the stirrup leather to the buckle, as you will need to know this after you have replaced the stirrup.

      Pull the stirrup leather free of the buckle and carefully slide the stirrup free of the stirrup leather. Then take the new stirrup and slide it on to the stirrup leather.

      Pull the stirrup leather up until the right hole is found, then re-buckle the stirrup leather. Run the stirrup leather back up the saddle until the end of the stirrup leather is under the flap of the saddle.
