How to Measure the Seat on an Australian Saddle

Riding in an Australian saddle is an excellent way to enjoy the best of the English riding world combined with the best of the Western riding tradition. Like a Western saddle, an Australian saddle features the security of a saddle horn, and like an English saddle the Australian saddle is lightweight and easy to carry. But as with any saddle it is important to measure the Australian saddle carefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Australian saddle securely on its saddle rack or saddle stand. Using a saddle rack or stand will make it easier to get an accurate measurement.

    • 2

Place the tape measure at the front of the saddle horn and extend it to the back of the saddle seat. Take note of the size; this is the seat size of the Australian saddle.

    • 3

Try out several different sizes of Australian saddle at your local tack shop or saddle maker. Sit in the saddle as you would if you were riding your horse, allowing your legs to extend as they would if you were riding. The ideal Australian saddle seat should be neither too small nor too large. If the saddle fits your body properly your legs will feel secure without feeling cramped while your seat will feel like a part of the saddle. Once you have found the perfect fit take note of the seat size and use it as you shop.
