Measuring an English Saddle
Take your English saddle and place it firmly on a sturdy saddle rack. Placing the saddle on a solid rack will make it easier to get the measurement you need.
Locate the brad on the side of the saddle near the front. The brad is the shiny silver disk located close to the front of the saddle. Take your measuring tape and place it on that brad, then extend it up and over to the back of the saddle. Take note of that reading; that is the seat size of the English saddle.
Visit your local tack shop and sit in several of the saddles on display. Take note of how comfortable each seat is, and when you have found the one that fits your body the best take note of the seat size. Use this seat size to find the best saddle for you and your horse.
Measuring a Western Saddle
Take your Western saddle and place it on a secure saddle stand. This will make it easier to get an accurate measurement.
Locate the swell on the front of the saddle. The swell is the part of the saddle that contains the saddle horn. Place your measuring tape against the back of the swell and run it to the back of the saddle seat. Take note of this measurement; this is the seat size of your Western saddle.
Visit your local saddle maker or tack shop to try out several of the display models. Sit in each saddle and find the one that fits your body the best. When you have found the best fitting saddle take note of the seat size and use it as you shop.
