Measuring an English Saddle
Take your saddle and place it securely on a saddle rack. This will make it easier to get the accurate seat measurement you need. Locate the small round silver rivet near the front of the saddle. You will see this rivet on both sides of the saddle, just back from the front swell.
Place your tape measure at that silver rivet. Measure from that point to the very back of the saddle. The length of that diagonal line is the size of the seat. Be sure to take the measurement several times to make sure you have an accurate reading. English saddles are sized from 14 inches to 22 inches in 1-inch increments, with 16 inches to 18 inches being the most common sizes. Most tack shops will have those common sizes in stock, while smaller or larger sizes may need to be special ordered.
Go to your local tack shop and try out several of the saddles they have on display. Sit in each saddle to see how it fits your body, then take note of the seat size for the saddles you like the best. The seat size will be noted right on the tag of each saddle, making it easier to find the saddle you need. Take note of the seat size you need and use that as you continue to shop.
Measuring a Western Saddle
Take your saddle and place it on a sturdy saddle rack. Before you start, make sure you have a good tape measure - the soft tape measures used by tailors work best for measuring the size of a saddle seat.
Locate the swell of the western saddle. The swell is the part of the saddle with the saddle horn on top. Place your tape measure up against the back of the well and hold it securely in place. Run the tape measure from the swell to the back of the saddle seat and record that measurement. That is the seat size. Most Western saddles will have seat sizes ranging from 13 inches to 17 inches or 18 inches, although smaller and larger sizes are generally available as special orders. Be sure to take your measurement twice to ensure accuracy.
Go to a local tack shop or saddle shop and try out several different Western saddles. Consider the feel of each saddle to see which seat size suits you best. The seat of the saddle should not be too loose or too tight - look for a saddle that holds you securely in place. When you have found the right size, look at the tag on the saddle and note the seat size. Use this seat size as you continue shopping.
