Instructions
Look for the maker's mark on your saddle. On most western saddles, the maker's mark will be located near the bottom of the stirrup leather, generally on the right side of the leather as you are facing the saddle. Some makers also place their brands on the small piece of leather designed to hold the extra length of the girth strap. On older saddles, the maker's mark may be hard to read, so you may need a magnifying glass or a flashlight to make it out.
Write down the name of the saddle maker and locate the company's website. If the saddle was made by a major saddlery such as Bighorn, Textan or Circle Y, the website may provide instructions for ordering replacement parts, as well as instructions on how to identify the model number of your saddle. In some cases, you can find the model number right next to the maker's mark on the stirrup leather or even on the top of the saddle horn. English saddles often list the model number under the front flap.
Look for saddle makers in your area. If you are unable to find a nearby saddle maker, contact a local tack shop and ask about saddle repair services. Tack shop owners often work with local saddle makers and saddle repair people who may not advertise. Keep in mind that many saddle makers get their work through word of mouth, so you may also want to ask your fellow horse owners for recommendations.
Get complete instructions if you decide to order replacement saddle parts over the Internet. Some saddle parts--such as stirrups and back cinches--are easy to replace, but others can be a bit more challenging. If you do not receive the instructions you need, contact the seller for more information.
How to buy Replacement Saddle Parts
A quality saddle is no small investment, and it is important to care for and maintain that saddle properly. A well-maintained western or English saddle can last for many years, but occasionally small parts such as a latigo or back cinch will need to be replaced. When those parts fail, it is important to know how to obtain the replacement parts you need to get your saddle back in service as quickly as possible.
