How to Connect the Lead Rope to the Halter

Most lead ropes have a spring-loaded snap that simply snaps onto the bottom ring or loop of your halter. But some rope halters come with lead ropes that are tied in, or come with no lead rope at all. Tying a lead rope into your rope halter is quite easy and allows you to use any spare piece of rope as a lead line. A snap is a weak spot when tying a horse, which provides a safety break-away. But if you tie your horse overnight, you may want to eliminate the snap and must tie the lead rope into the halter.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull lead rope through the bottom loop of your halter. Tie a knot in the end of the lead rope that will be tied into the halter. This knot will keep your rope from unraveling and your next knot from slipping.

    • 2

Tie the halter end of your lead rope around the tail of your lead rope. Wrap the halter end of the rope around the tail once and pull the knotted end through the loop you just created.

Tighten your rope so that the knot you made in Step 1 is tight against the halter and not flopping around.
