How to Calculate Saddle Seat Size

The correct size of saddle is important for your comfort and so that the saddle will function correctly. If the saddle is too small, you might get sore and not be able to use your legs well. If the saddle is too large, you might get thrown around on top of your horse as he moves. Correct saddle size can improve your riding. Your seat size in an English saddle will be bigger than in a western saddle. Correct saddle size can only be found by sitting in saddles; sizes can vary between manufacturers because of the saddle's build.

Instructions

  1. Fitting an English saddle

    • 1

Sit in the saddle on a saddle stand. You want to be in the deepest part of the saddle, which is usually right behind the pommel, and your thigh length shouldn't force you to sit toward the back of the saddle.

    • 2

Measure the amount of space you have in front and behind your body in the saddle. It should be close to equal.

    • 3

Check that your knees are in the center of the knee roll (the padding in the front of the side of the saddle). You should have about an inch in front of your knee to the edge.

    Measuring a western saddle

    • 4

Sit in the saddle on a saddle stand. You should just naturally settle into the deepest part of the saddle, which might be in the center of the saddle or toward the back of it.

    • 5

Measure in front and behind your body on the saddle. You should have approximately four inches between you and the front of the saddle and about an inch and a half behind you on the saddle.

    • 6

Feel the width of the saddle between your thighs. You shouldn't feel that the saddle is too wide so that it forces your legs away uncomfortably, which some western saddles can do.
