Considerations
-
Rugs are sold in sizes based on the measurement from the middle of the horse's chest to the middle of his tail. Get a friend to help you take this measurement with twine or string. A measuring tape may spook your horse.
Size
-
Measure the twine to determine how long your horse is. Many, but not all, rugs are sized in even numbers, so round up the measurement to the closest even number to calculate your horse's size.
Fit
-
When the rug is on the horse, it should fit snugly, but not too tightly, across the chest to prevent blanket rubs. The back should come over the dock of his tail.
Expert Insight
-
Some companies size their rugs more generously than others. If you are not sure about a selection, get input from your local tack store.
Care
-
Consider whether the rug you want will shrink when it is laundered. If it seems likely, buy the next size up.
Warning
-
A rug, blanket or sheet that is too big or too tight can cause painful blanket rubs. It can also slide out of place and easily get tangled in the horse's legs.
