How to Measure Horse Rugs

Although horses live outdoors and have a natural coat to weather the elements, in some circumstances a horse blanket, or rug, will give them extra protection. A well-fitting horse rug is important for the horse's comfort and safety. You can properly measure a horse rug so that it correctly fits your horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Holding the measuring tape, approach your horse when he is relaxed and standing naturally. This may be in his stall while he is eating or in the cross-ties.

    • 2

Standing near the horse's front shoulder, take the measuring tape in your left hand. Place the end of the measuring tape in the center of the horse's chest, directly under his neck.

    • 3

Extend the measuring tape across the horse's side until you cannot reach any further. Note the measurement on the tape. Reposition the end of the measuring tape at this point.

    • 4

Once again, extend the measuring tape. This time, you should be able to extend along the horse's side until just before you reach his tail. Note the measurement approximately 10 to 12 inches below the point where the top of the tail begins.

Add these two measurements together to obtain the correct sizing for your horse's blanket. Blanket sizes come in 2-inch increments, ranging anywhere from 64 inches for a pony to 84 inches for a draft horse. If your horse falls in between sizes (75 inches, for example), consider purchasing a size 76 instead of a 74. You can always have the blanket darted or taken in if necessary.
