How to Make a Miniature Pony Harness

Miniature ponies and horses can still be used as working animals despite their small size. Nylon or leather harnesses for miniatures are available from tack dealers, but you can make your own serviceable version. Comfort and fit are important considerations when making a harness for a miniature pony. Take into account the strength and durability of materials. Minis may be small, but they are strong.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a diagram of a simple harness for reference. The basic parts for a light driving harness are: bridle, optional blinkers, side reins, chest strap, surcingle or girth, and crupper. The diagram may show additional nonessential parts. Identify the harness parts you plan to use and their positions.

    • 2

Measure the pony for each harness piece. Accuracy is important for a comfortable fit. Mark the measurements on the diagram as you work. Note placements for buckles and other hardware pieces.

    • 3

Use a soldering iron with a cutting blade. Cut and heat-seal pieces of nylon webbing according to the measurements. Label each piece using masking tape and a marker. Organize the pieces for each harness part and work on one section at a time. For example, keep all of the bridle pieces together, all of the girth parts and so on.

    • 4

Use a heavy-duty needle and nylon thread in the sewing machine. Select a medium stitch length. Cut slots for buckle tongues. Attach buckles and other hardware pieces. Stitch a square with an X inside it to reinforce stress points where buckles and hardware are attached. Sew sheepskin padding to the inside of the surcingle. Sew the harness pieces together as necessary.

Try the completed harness parts on the pony. Adjust the fit. Recut and sew parts if necessary. Do not use parts that are too tight. Seal any raw edges on the nylon webbing to prevent unraveling.
