How to Measure a Horse for a New Western Cinch

All horses are not created equal. Even when you think that two look like an identical size, the chances are pretty good that they will need two different sized Western cinches.

Instructions

    • 1

Get one or two friends to help you. This can be done with two people, but three makes it even easier.

    • 2

Make sure your horse is on level ground. The more level your horse is standing, the more likely you are to get an accurate measurement.

    • 3

Have one person stand in front of your horse’s left shoulder, and the other person in front of its right shoulder. If you have a third person, he should hold the horse. If you don’t have a third person, use a safety knot to tie your horse.

    • 4

Draw the lead rope taut across your horse’s girth area. Use a piece of tape to mark the part of the lead rope that passes the horse’s elbow. Make sure the tape is stuck securely to the rope.

    • 5

Put away your horse. Then use a measuring tape to measure from the end of the lead rope to the spot marked with the tape. The number of inches will be the size girth you need.
