How to Fit a Bridle

A properly fitted bridle is an essential part of riding a horse. The bridle must fit the horse securely and hold the bit in a proper position to assure that you are in correct contact with your horse. Checking a bridle for proper fit is not a difficult process, although it does take a little time to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the bit of your choice to the bridle. The bit must be securely fastened to the headstall piece, so make sure that you tighten the screws accordingly.

    • 2

Slide the bridle over your horse’s head and insert the bit into the horse's mouth. Place the crown portion of the bridle over the poll of your horse’s head and slip the reins over your arm to keep them off of the ground.

    • 3

Check the fit of the cheek pieces. The cheek pieces should lay flat against the side of your horse’s face and should not interfere with his eyesight.

    • 4

Unbuckle the cheek pieces and slide them up or down as necessary. The bit should fit into your horse’s mouth so that it puts one to two wrinkles in the corner of his mouth and avoids hitting him in the teeth. A bit that is too loose will cause your horse a good deal of pain and irritation.

    • 5

Tighten the curb strap under your horse’s chin. You need to be able to place no more than one finger between the strap and his chin so fit it accordingly.

    • 6

Place the reins over your horse’s head and lay the reins against her neck. Adjust the reins to that they are long enough for your horse to comfortably lower her head, but not so long that you risk tangling the reins.

    • 7

Adjust any nose or earpieces on your bridle last. Earpieces are not normally vital parts of the bridle and can be adjusted after you’ve fit the rest of the bridle to your horse’s head.
