How to Make a Breakaway Horse Halter

Breakaway halters are the best type of halter to use when your horse is turned out wearing a halter. Regular halters may get caught on the fence, trees, other debris or even your horse's hoof. They don't break when the horse resists, resulting in an accident or death. Breakaway halters are safe because if the halter gets caught, it will break if enough pressure is forced onto it. Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of leather the same width as the breakaway halter and about 8 inches long. This leather can be from an old purse or coat, anywhere as long as it is soft and thin.

    • 2

Make a small hole in the center of the strip, 3 1/2 inches from one end. Double the leather strip so the hole is centered and feed the old buckle through that hole, with the shortest end up.

    • 3

Make two more holes (spaced an inch below the first hole and half an inch apart). Lace a thin strip of leather through both holes and tie a simple square knot. Make a third hole about a half an inch below that.

    • 4

Use a regular leather or nylon halter and buckle the crownpiece strap into the buckle. Insert the two strips of leather into the regular halter buckle. Now you have an insert for turning your horse out.
