How to Make Flyspray for a Horse

There's nothing more frustrating than spending $30 on a bottle of fly spray for your horse then finding out that it doesn't work... except possibly trying to work with a horse that's being eaten up by the bugs, and is more focused on getting them off than on listening to you. Either way, bugs and flies go hand in hand with barns, stables and, unfortunately, horses. Summertime months can mean going through bottle after bottle of fly spray, and the cost can add up. Fortunately, it's very easy to make your own homemade fly spray that will cost you only a fraction of the price.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a spray bottle; any fairly large size one works, but it should hold at least 32 ounces. Make sure the bottle is clean. Don't use anything that has previously been used, for harsh chemicals may cause a reaction.

    • 2

Put one ounce. of the citronella in the spray bottle. Before you do, however, make sure that you're using 100 percent citronella, and not the oil that's used for outdoor torches. You can find the pure citronella in online stores and your local country store.

    • 3

Mix in two ounces of the Skin So Soft and one cup of the apple cider vinegar.

    • 4

Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake it until it mixes completely.

    • 5

Spray the mixture liberally on your horse, avoiding his eyes. If he doesn't like it sprayed on his face--and many don't--you can put some on a cloth and wipe his face. Store the bottle and the unused portion out of direct sunlight.
