How to Use a Hackamore on a Horse

Often described as a gentler way to rein a horse, the hackamore is a basic headstall. Many riders feel a hack is more humane than a bit, however, that isn’t always the case. The nerve endings in a horse’s nose are extremely sensitive. The hackamore works by exerting pressure on these nerves. Used incorrectly, a hackamore can cause a lot of pain.

Use a bosal hackamore hen you want a light refined touch to rein your horse. Often used on green horses, the hack fits correctly when the bosal falls between the nasal bones and the cartilage on the horse’s nose. Rawhide is a better choice than rope or cable for the horse’s comfort.

Try a side-pull hack for easy turning and stopping. When you pull upwards, the hack tightens slightly giving you more control. The side-pull hack is also good for leading colts behind another horse or by hand in the corral.

    • 3

Purchase a hackamore with a padded nose strap or add soft lambswool padding to prevent injury to the horse’s nose. In addition, make sure you can put two fingers between the chinstrap and your horse’s chin for comfort.

Check the shanks to make sure they rotate at least 45 degrees and adjust the curb strap if they do not.

    • 5

Resist using a hackamore designed with one entire circle of steel, designed to surround the horse’s nose and muzzle. Since they are not adjustable to fit the width of the horse’s nose, damage to his nerves is likely.

    • 6

The general rule is to use the gentlest hack on your horse that will still allow you to control him. Wider straps and adjustable nose pieces provide a custom fit since no two horses are the same.

Rein a horse wearing a hack in the same manner you would a horse with a bit. Use the least amount of pressure needed in order to make your horse obey. Use a combination of reining and body movement to control your horse.
