Instructions
Use an excellent grade of leather for replacing the reins. Reins should be inspected frequently as they are essential to guiding the horse. Check the guide loops for the reins to be sure they are attached firmly.
Check the pliability of the leather on the belly strap, tug strap, breeching strap, traces and breeching. These are easily replaced, but work the leather first to reduce the stiffness of new leather.
Remove the collar. When repairing the collar pay close attention to the wear and tear on the hames which run around the length of the collar.
Replace the winkers. These help keep the horse from meandering too much. Winkers can easily be fashioned by a person adept at tack.
Use good quality tools such as a leather punch and a sharp awl for all repairs. Good quality leather, thread and rawhide should be the only materials used. Do not buy cheap or low quality materials.
