How to Put a Halter on a Horse

It may seem as simple as slipping the opening over your horse's nose, but haltering a horse requires a bit more thought. When placing a halter on a horse, you must consider your safety as well as the comfort of your animal friend. A few simple tips can help you make the haltering experience better for both of you.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your halter and lead rope for wear and tear before beginning. If the rope or halter piece looks frayed, worn or there is debris in the material, make sure that you make the proper repairs before placing it on your horse. If all is well, unbuckle the halter and attach the lead rope.

Approach your horse from the front so that he can see you coming. You can easily startle a horse, causing him to buck and kick when coming from behind. Speak to your horse as you approach to keep him calm and then let him sniff the halter and lead rope.

Stand on the left side of your horse and pass the lead rope under her neck. Reach over the top and bring the loose end of the lead over the top of the neck. Grip both ends of the rope. This will help to keep your horse from wandering as you place the halter on.

Place both ends of the lead rope in your left and and then hold the harness on either side of the nose band with both hands. Slide the band over your horse's nose and then up over the ears, keeping hold of the lead rope.

Buckle the halter, making sure that you can fit two fingers under the nose and neck bands. Remove the lead from around the horse's neck and you are ready to go.
