1. Park your truck on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Locate the slave cylinder. It is located on the driver’s side of the transmission, near the bottom.
3. Clean the area around the slave cylinder to prevent dirt from entering the system.
4. Loosen the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder.
5. Attach a clear hose to the bleeder screw and run the other end of the hose into a container filled with brake fluid.
6. Have a helper slowly press down on the clutch pedal while you watch the fluid in the container.
7. When you see bubbles coming out of the hose, close the bleeder screw.
8. Repeat steps 5-7 until no more bubbles come out of the hose.
9. Top off the brake fluid reservoir and test the clutch pedal to make sure it feels firm.
Replacing 1989 F-150 4x4 Slave Cylinder
1. Follow steps 1-3 from the bleeding instructions above.
2. Remove the two bolts that hold the slave cylinder to the transmission.
3. Remove the slave cylinder from the transmission.
4. Clean the mounting surface on the transmission and inspect the slave cylinder for damage.
5. If the slave cylinder is damaged, replace it.
6. Insert the pushrod of the new slave cylinder into the clutch fork.
7. Install the two bolts that hold the slave cylinder to the transmission.
8. Connect the hydraulic line to the slave cylinder.
9. Bleed the clutch system per bleeding procedure above.
