How are horses attacked by mountain lions?

While mountain lions are known predators of deer and other ungulates, horse attacks are relatively rare. There have been reports of mountain lions attacking horses in the western United States, but these incidents are not common. When they do occur, attacks typically happen at night or in low-light conditions. Mountain lions stealthily approach their prey and use their sharp claws and teeth to bring them down. They usually target the neck or back of the horse and may inflict multiple injuries. Horses can be injured or even killed in such attacks.
