What horses are native in Utah?

There are no horses native to Utah or, for that matter, the entire continent of North America.

Here's why:

* Horses were domesticated in Eurasia: Horses were first domesticated in the steppes of Central Asia around 4000 BC.

* Horses arrived with Europeans: Horses were brought to North America by European explorers and settlers starting in the 15th century.

While Utah has a rich history of horse ranching and is known for its beautiful wild horse herds, these horses are descended from domesticated horses that escaped or were released into the wild.
