      Look to make sure it is safe before entering the pasture. Have the halter unlatched and ready to be placed on the horse with the lead rope attached. Visually determine where the horse is located in the pasture, noting any obstacles or other horses that may make catching a particular horse more difficult . Walk slowly towards the horse.

      When approaching the horse call their name to let them know you are there. Extend a hand forward offering a treat.

      Walk slowly to the horses shoulder maintaining visual contact with the horse. Make sure the horse is aware of your presence before trying to approach them. Do not approach from the rear.

      Pat the horse on the neck. Place the lead rope over the horses neck. Facing forward from the horse's shoulder put the halter on the horse and secure the latch.

      After the horse has been successfully caught and haltered, give him a treat.

      If the horse begins to walk away before being caught, do not chase him. Wait until the horse stops and then repeat the process of catching them.
