How to Play With Your Horse

Horses are inquisitive and insightful animals. Standing around all day with nothing to do is no more interesting and entertaining for them than it would be for you. Once boredom sets in, your horse may develop bad habits, simply to alleviate the tedium and dullness. A solid session of romping will enhance their physical fitness, increase their strength and flexibility and improve their overall mood.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a durable toy specifically designed to be used by horses, such as a large, sturdy ball. Using balls in play encourages the horse to learn how to use and control her body without human intervention. Balls assist in the development of concentration, focus and balance---as the horse will undoubtedly try to lie upon it, once she becomes comfortable using it for play time.

    • 2

Lead the horse to an enclosed corral, where there is adequate room to maneuver.

    • 3

Inflate the ball and carry it into the corral. Set it down in front of the horse and wait for his curiosity to become aroused by the appearance of an unusual object.

    • 4

Wait for your horse to nudge the ball. Be prepared for the horse to be somewhat startled by the ball rolling away. Wait for the ball to stop moving, and approach it again. If the horse does not follow you, pick it up and bring it back to the horse, encouraging the horse to hit it again.

Continue carrying the ball back to your horse until she seems comfortable with the new object. Kick it back to her, while remaining a comfortable distance away. Eventually she will kick the ball or pick it up with her teeth and throw it.
