How to Build Horse Gates

Those with open land find that riders of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles often trespass on their property, tearing up their land and frightening their livestock. However, fencing off their property isn't practical either because it doesn't allow horses and their riders to move around on the land without constantly stopping to open and close gates. A horse gate allows horses to pass through but blocks motorcycles and ATVs.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an opening in your fence that is about 6 and a half feet wide.

    • 2

Set short fence posts or rebar inside the opening, sinking them in 4-foot concrete-filled holes. The distance between the posts should be less than 3 feet. This will prevent ATVs from going through the gate.

    • 3

Attach poles, pipe lengths or rebar between the short posts and the fence opening to prevent any passage on the outside of the short posts. Create a V shape in the horse gate so the opening is wide at the horse's eye level.

    • 4

Attach a bar between the posts several inches high. Your horse will be able to step over the bar, but a motorcycle won't be able to go over it.

    • 5

Cover the gate in reflective tape or place a reflective sign on the gate. Otherwise, an inattentive motorcycle or ATV rider may only see the wide opening at the top of the gate and run into it.
