How to Measure for a Snaffle Bit

The bit is the metal part of the bridle that passes through the horse's mouth to which reins are attached. For a bit to be effective, it needs to be in contact with specific parts of the mouth. Snaffle bits come in several widths and are one of the milder types of bit. It is important to get the right sized bit for the comfort of your horse and your own safety and enjoyment, as a comfortable relaxed horse is much better to ride than one struggling with uncomfortable gear.

Take a piece of string about 12 inches long and tie a large knot about an inch from one end. Place it in your horse's mouth so that the knot touches one side of the mouth. Mark the string against the side of the mouth at the other side then remove it from your horse's mouth. Use a tape measure to measure the distance between the mark and the knot. This is the width of your horse's mouth.

Select a snaffle bit that is about ½-inch wider than your measurement. Bits come in standard sizes; the most common is 5 inches wide. Sizes tend to be in half-inch increments so you can get a 4½-inch, 5½-inch or 6-inch bit. Attach the bit to your bridle and put the bridle on the horse. The rings at the end of the snaffle bit should lie fairly flat against the side of your horse's head. If the rings enter the mouth, the bit is too small. There should be no more than about ¼-inch of bit visible at each side of the mouth.

Adjust the bridle to make sure the bit is sitting properly. Adjust the cheek straps to make sure they are the same length. This ensures the bit sits evenly in the mouth and is not pulled to one side. Adjust the cheek straps until there are one or two small wrinkles at each side of the mouth. This means the snaffle bit is high enough in the horse's mouth so that it will not irritate the tongue. Your snaffle bit is now correctly measured and fitted.
