How to Fill Out a Transfer Ownership of an American Paint Horse

One of the advantages of buying a registered paint horse is that you have a legal record of the purchase in case any ownership questions arise later on. But those protections are not automatic. You must fill out an official transfer of ownership and notify the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) that you are now the legal owner of the animal in question. Some American Paint horses can be quite valuable, so it is important to protect your rights with a transfer of ownership as soon as possible after the sale.

Review the registration papers and ensure that the last owner listed is the individual making the sale. Be suspicious if the names do not match. The transfer must take place between the last registered owner as recorded by APHA and the new buyer.

    • 2

Obtain a transfer form from the current owner or from the APHA website (see Resources). Enter the requested information on the transfer form, including the registered name of the horse, its registration number and its sire and dam names.

    • 3

Enter the name of the seller and buyer. Ask the seller to sign the transfer form in the appropriate block.

    • 4

Submit the completed and signed transfer form to the address listed on the transfer paperwork. Include the applicable fees for the transfer. Make a copy of the transfer form before sending it in to APHA.
