What do horses wear on the bottom of their hoofs?

Horses don't wear anything on the bottom of their hoofs!

They have a tough, protective layer called the hoof wall, which is made of keratin (the same material our fingernails are made of). This wall is very durable and helps protect the sensitive inner structures of the hoof.

However, horses do sometimes wear shoes on their hooves for protection and support, especially when used for riding or working on hard surfaces. These shoes are made of metal and are nailed to the hoof wall.
