How to Create Your Own Book Covers With Horses

Majestic, inspiring, beautiful ... many words describe a horse or a herd of horses galloping through a green pasture, heals flying and mane flowing behind them. Images of these four-legged creatures can personalize just about any item a horse lover can dream up, including book covers. This is a logical place to start for school-going horse lovers, as schools often require students to cover their books. Making the book covers horse themed allows the student to personalize their books, and easily identify their particular book.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the book with a ruler. Additionally, measure the width of the book's spine. Add 4 inches to the vertical measurement. Add 6 inches, plus the spine's width, to the horizontal measurement. So, if your book is 4 inches wide and 6 inches long with a 1-inch spine, you will need paper at least 8 by 13 inches.

    • 2

Cut the fabric or paper to the measurements determined in the previous step.

    • 3

Place the book into the middle of the material. Open it to expose one side of the inside cover. The material should be print side down. Fold the top and bottom to equal the edge of the book. Snip the material on both sides of the spine on the top and bottom. This will make putting the cover on easier.

    • 4

Fold the material around the edge and tuck in the corners. Tape or glue as needed. Use fabric or paper glue, depending on the material chosen. Tape will not hold fabric. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for the second side of the cover.

    • 5

Close the book and snip the excess from the top and bottom of the spine.

    • 6

Draw or glue on horse images to the cover. Use markers, pastels or computer images. You can skip this step if you used fabric or wrapping paper with horses already on it.
